An NBA team hired me! 🏀✨

Even though fully extended, I barely reach the crotch area of most NBA players; I was “drafted” by the Portland Trailblazers NBA team.

Of course, it was not to play basketball…

I was hired to build a mobile app!

The app was used by over 100 people to coordinate their annual media event.

This is the day when they create most of the media (photos/video/social media content) for the team.

Until they hired me, they were using spreadsheets and print-outs to coordinate all the logistics for media day.

It was quite a messy process, so they decided to move to the 21st century and build an app.

They asked some agencies around, which quoted them over $50K and several months to build the app.

But they needed something built in less than a week!

This is when they found Glide – the tool I’ve been using to build apps without coding.

Then, they looked for a Glide expert, and they found me (yeah!)

Here is the best part…

They contacted me on a Wednesday afternoon to discuss the app the next day in the morning.

Thursday comes, we get on the Zoom call, and Billie (the guy in charge of media day) spends about 10 mins explaining all the stuff they want the app to do.

I’m patiently nodding and listening…

Then Billie asks: “What do you think? is this doable in Glide? can you do it by end of next week?”

Billie hadn’t noticed, that all this time, I had a slightly devilish smirk on my face.

He is about to find out why.

I reply to Billie: “Hmm… I think so. Let me share my screen.”

I share my screen and proceed to show him the exact app he has been describing for the last 10 minutes.

The app is already done! Complete with all the functionality. It even has all the Trailblazers players’ pictures uploaded!

(Unfortunately, I wasn’t recording the Zoom call because Billie’s expression of disbelief/astonishment was priceless.)

After taking a couple of seconds to process the moment, Billie only says one word:

“UNBELIEVABLE.”

Can you imagine a guy who has spent weeks getting $50K+ quotes and 2+ month timelines, getting the exact app he envisioned built overnight before even getting on a call to discuss it?

Yes. Billie just realized the world has changed.

Building mobile apps now can take hours instead of months.

Billie asks: “Well… so how much do you want for it?”

I say: “One thousand zillion… cookies!”

Just kidding…

I say: “Well, It took me about 5 hours to build…”

Billie stops me: “How about $1,000 for your 5 hours?”

I hesitate to accept the offer…

Billie ups his offer: “$1,500 USD? I PayPal you right now…”

I say: “Sure, done.”

Billie keeps his word, and while still on the call, I get an email from PayPal that $1,500 have been paid.

Could I have charged more?

Sure. But I was happy with $300 USD per hour.

Anyway…

Over the next week leading to media day, Billie kept asking for small tweaks and improvements, which he gladly paid for.

So what happened on media day?

The app was a total success.

Billie even paid me to monitor the app while 100+ crew members used it to coordinate having 18 NBA players get photos/videos at 24 different stations.

How does the app actually work?

The app is quite complex, so I thought it would be easier to record a video explaining how it works.

This was such a fun project to work on.

Most importantly, the client was super happy, and the app helped a bunch of people do their work on a very important day for the Trailblazers.

I think Glide is just the perfect tool to solve those types of event logistic problems.

P.S. How did I know what to build before the call? Billie did a great job explaining what he needed when he booked the call with me. I used that info to build the app before the call (and the rest is history as they say…)
