How to teach with a tablet like Salman Khan

Hola Super Grumers!

Many of my students dread the thought of recording their face when teaching online.

Well, you don’t have to!

Have you heard of Khan Academy?

Khan Academy is one of the largest online education companies in the world. They have a Youtube channel with over 5 million subscribers and more than 7 thousand free lectures. Most of these lectures are recorded by a single person, Salman Khan— Khan Academy’s founder and CEO — who in 2006 started to upload lectures to Youtube to teach Math to her cousin Nadia.

Salman’s teaching tool of choice is a simple graphics tablet connected to a PC. Then, he uses a free sketching app and a screen recording app to record his lessons as he talks and draws using his tablet.

It’s a simple and affordable setup that results in a very organic and engaging learning experience as it closely resembles the same way millions of classes are delivered at school and universities using a whiteboard or blackboard.

Besides being an affordable and effective online teaching approach, the other advantage is that it doesn’t require teachers to show their face, which simplifies course production and opens the door to online teaching to all those teachers that dislike talking to a camera.

If this solution intrigues you, the next logical question is, how do you record lectures using a tablet?

Well, good news, I have created an in-depth tutorial where you will learn the exact equipment you’ll need to record lectures with a tablet the same way Sal Khan has done for many years.

You can watch the entire tutorial for free on Youtube here → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3rYfgm0Asw

The tutorial includes two complete demos of how to record lectures using a cheap setup (~$100) and a fancier setup (~$600).

Recommended Equipment

Here is a list with all the tools I mention in the video (please note, some links are affiliate links but I have no relation to any of the companies that make these products)

BEST TABLETS

BEST USB MICROPHONES

BEST WHITEBOARD APPS (All free)

BEST SCREEN RECORDING SOFTWARE

Can you just use an Android Tablet or iPad by itself?

Yes! I plan to make another tutorial covering whiteboard apps that allow you to do everything right from an Android tablet/iPad without having to get a separate screen recording tool like Camtasia.

If you can’t wait for that tutorial, here are the best apps I’ve found so far.

(Note: there are many whiteboard apps but not many that allow you to make videos right from the app)

IPAD WHITEBOARD APPS

ANDROID WHITEBOARD APPS

And that’s it for today. I hope you find the video and resources useful!

Have you tried teaching on a tablet?

What was the hardest thing for you?

Hit reply and let me know.

Peace, Love, and Tableto-Cookies!
